Author of
Ashland (Europa, 2026)

Ashland, forthcoming in early 2026 from Europa, is my first novel. Previously, I co-wrote a biography of the American revolutionary Abbie Hoffman that was published by Jeremy Tarcher, and translated several books from French, including Pascal Bonafoux’s Van Gogh: Self-Portraits. I co-edited several volumes of writings by Nelson Algren, including Nonconformity:Writing on Writing, Entrapment and Other Writings, and the critical edition of The Man with the Golden Arm. I founded the independent book publisher Seven Stories Press in 1995, and before that, in 1985, the predecessor company, Four Walls Eight Windows. Currently, I serve as editorial director and publisher of Seven Stories and divide my time between New Hampshire and New York.

A lyrical novel expressing the deep and sometimes dark involutions of a New England family story in layers of extraordinarily rich and beautiful language.
